#MNULIV Matchday Wk 9 Recap | OLSC Toronto

Did you ever think, in your wildest dreams, that the score line of a Liverpool FC vs Manchester United Premier League match would be 5-nil?  Not me. I predicted a win given our recent surge in play (and Man U’s vulnerabilities) but not a complete and utter blow out.  While LFC did not have to find it’s top gears to win this match thanks to the dismal play of Man U, it will still go down as one of our greatest League victories.

One could argue that the 5-nil win against Watford last week was predictable but to do that again a week later at Old Trafford, and after a mid-week match against Atletico Madrid?! Let’s let that sink in….

one for the history books

Before the match I posted a question on our Facebook page asking about the anticipated tactical play between Klopp and Ole Gunnar, suggesting that this might be a story of two managers, of two tactical styles.

That may have been prophetic (first time in my life). As Ole Gunnar admitted himself in the post-match interview, he chose the tactics and they failed. Liverpool played one of their best tactical games but Man U certainly made it easy for them, giving them huge areas of empty space for our midfield and forwards to play in.  The Manc’s backline was constantly being overrun and often found themselves in 3 v 2 or 2 v 1 situations in front of their net.

THE KING

Are we getting tired of talking about how incredible Mohammed Salah is? The last two weeks’ post-match blog posts featured Salah-appreciation videos but we have to do it again.  The King not only continued his scoring streak (scored in the last 10 premier league games) but did it with an emphatic hat trick, the first on this ground since Fred Howe scored three in a 5-2 triumph in 1936.

Instead of a recap real showing Salah’s goal from every angle, I thought it more appropriate to show the full highlight reel here as the entire team showed why they’re still unbeaten in the league.

And as in previous weeks, Salah’s magic is what most are talking about but can we also take a second to point out how freakin’ incredible this TEAM is?

  • Henderson’s curved pass off the outside of his right foot – at full gallop – to cut the Man U backline to set up Salah for his 3rd goal of the night? It was right out of Salah’s playbook from the previous match!
  • Konate getting is first start – AT OLD TRAFFORD – and deputizing for Gomes or Matip as if he’d been training with them for years! Ibu has more clearances than any other man on the pitch!
  • After a missed pass that might have given CR7 a chance to score, Robbo was all up in Ronny’s face…making the runs, getting is usual assists, and even managed to get a knee on what would have likely been a goal by Cavani late in the game.
  • NABY-LAD! After a week of the pundits calling for his head – despite his goal last week – Keita continued to show his promise. It was his best performance as a Liverpool player to date, no question. He simply dominated the midfield in this game, got a goal and an assist before being gunned down by that hacker, Pogba (who got is his 3rd red card in a Man U shirt).
  • Bobby (no last name required) continued to show why Klopp is such a HUGE fan. His play off the ball, orchestrating our attacks makes him one of the most impressive unsung heroes on the pitch.  He simply cut open the Man United’s defense like a hot knife through butter.

And while I won’t dwell on it, the desperation from CR7, Pogba, and other Man U players is a memory I’ll not care to remember. It was just sad (if not dangerous).

GOOD MEMORIES

But the excitement wasn’t just on the pitch! Toronto Reds showed once again why we’re the best fan club in the world!

The Madison Avenue Pub stepped up with an early opening, allowing fans to start piling in at 9:30 AM. Past tech and staffing issues were all overcome as we’ve learned to live and work together.  All the screens were on bright and early playing the previous Premier League matches, coffee was brewed and ready to pour (as were the beer taps), and a hot breakfast at the ready.

This was by far the most exciting match of the year at our home, which featured 300+ people spread out across the multiple rooms and heated patios at The Maddy. It was imply electric.

OLSC Toronto thanks all of you that came out to make this such a special event and the Madison for continuing to work with us to make your matchday experience the best it can be.
